PTE Vocabulary tips for acing PTE Academic

Vocabulary is one of the essential parts of the English language as it is the building blocks of the language. Developing vocabulary is quite crucial for PTE Academic alongside language skills (including reading, writing, listening and speaking), understanding the concept and pattern of the test, preparing a strategy for smooth execution of each section of the test and practicing the PTE practice test papers for assessment and enhancement.

Here are some of the PTE vocabulary tips for development and improvement to ace PTE Academic:

  • Read a lot: Reading is the best form of exercise to perform to develop and enhance the language overall. The more you read more uncommon and unique words you will come across. Reading a lot will help to get familiarized with new words and the way they are used in a sentence. For example, the petrified man clung to his torch as he walked through the foggy burial ground for the victims of the Civil War.

The commonly used words for “petrified” in the sentences like these are ‘terrified’ & ‘frightened’.

The use of unique words also depends on the structure of the sentence. The more you read, the more you come across different variations of commonly used sentences and words, directly influencing your lingo. It takes over 15-20 repeated exposure of the words to become a part of the vocabulary.

  • Surf through the Thesaurus: It is a good practice to immediately consult the dictionary when you come across new words. It helps to understand the meaning of the sentence immediately and also gives multiple synonyms of the same word. For example, one may come across a sentence like “she contemplated her life over a three-course lunch.

The word “contemplated” means look thoughtfully for a long time and the synonyms are “look at, view, regard, examine, inspect, observe, survey, study.”

This helps to gather more words of the same meaning and contributes to the development.

  • Write what you read: As reading more helps to come across new words, writing them down in a form of sentence helps to integrate it in your vocabulary and keeps the word at your tips for anytime use. Writing more will also help to develop the writing skills and the quality of sentence structure and formation as well.
  • Learn one word at a time: Make a plan to learn at least one word per day. This will help to learn new words on daily basis and eludes any form of the overload of words that can rather make things more confusing and difficult to understand & learn.
